Gelato Day 2025, the Jubilee year flavor is “Hallelujah”
The European Artisan Gelato Day falls on March 24, the only date officially recognized by the European Parliament dedicated to a food product. The event is celebrated throughout Europe to promote the culture of artisan ice cream and the traditions and knowhow of genuine gelato producers.
For 2025, the Flavor of the Year will be “Hallelujah” - a symbolic tribute to the Jubilee.
Sponsored by the Dicastery for Evangelization, Section for Fundamental Questions of Evangelization in the World, and by MASAF, the chosen flavor is a gianduia ice cream with toasted hazelnuts and pure chocolate chips. The official recipe, by Maestro Vincenzo Squatrito of Ritrovo Orchidea Ice Cream from the Sicilian town of Oliveri, was selected in the Artglace competition during SIGEP WORLD 2025 - the World Expo for Foodservice Excellence.
The celebrations will begin on Sunday 23 March with a special event in Piazza Risorgimento, near St. Peter's, where the flavor of the year will be distributed to pilgrims as part of a charity fundraiser. On 24 March, the Hallelujah flavor will be available in all participating ice cream shops, including versions prepared by top European ice cream makers.
This year, Gambero Rosso will also be a partner, thus involving the ice cream shops which feature in Italy’s ice cream ’bible’ - the Guida Gelaterie d'Italia - in the preparation of the flavor of the year.
