The current church dates back to 1578, when it was built by the Polish cardinal Stanislaus Hosius and dedicated to the patron saint of the Poles, St Stanislaus Szczepanowski, replacing the previous mediaeval structure of San Salvatore in pensilis de Sorraca.
The complex was also endowed with a hospice and hospital for Poles on pilgrimage to Rome. It then fell into disuse for a long period of time, and was completely rebuilt in 1735. To this day it remains the National Church of the Polish community in Rome.
