The origins of the current church can be traced back to 1585, and the election to the papacy of Sixtus V, who came from Croatia and wanted to build a place of worship dedicated to St Jerome, his fellow Croat. Scenes from the life of the saint are evident throughout the interior decoration of the church, underlining Pope Sixtus V’s devotion to the saint and his link with Croatia. To this day the Croatian community considers this church a spiritual centre of significant importance.
