Rome prepares for the Jubilee: new parking lots and special rates for pilgrims’ buses
With fewer than twenty days to go until the official start of the 2025 Jubilee, on December 24, Rome is preparing to welcome millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. To ensure a proper reception for pilgrims - without impacting negatively on the quality of life of local citizens - the City Council of Rome has planned numerous infrastructure changes, especially in the areas of transport and traffic management.
Parking lots for tourist buses
One of the key interventions for the 2025 Jubilee has seen the creation of parking lots for buses on the outskirts of Rome. The aim is to move buses away from the historic center, thus reducing traffic and improving the visitor experience for those arriving as pilgrims. The parking lots will be connected to public transport links, such as the metro and trains, to ensure the quick and convenient transfer of visitors to the main places of interest, and in particular to the Vatican.
Special rates for tourist buses and permits
To facilitate access and parking for coaches, special rates have been introduced. Now, buses using the peripheral car parks will have access to lower rate access to the limited traffic zones (ZTL) in the city center. Another new move will see the introduction of temporary increases in rates for access permits to the ZTL for other vehicles, during the Jubilee celebrations, in a bid to better manage the flow of vehicles.
A special tourist ticket
In addition, a special tourist ticket will be available for those using buses parked in the peripheral car parks. This ticket will offer visitors a cheaper and more convenient way to get around the city, encouraging the use of public transport and reducing traffic. Discounts will be provided for religious groups recognized by local dioceses, such as diocesan pilgrimages visiting Rome for the Jubilee.
A long-term legacy for the city
All these interventions are designed not only for the Jubilee of 2025, but also to improve the long-term quality of life for the citizens of Rome. Traffic management, the creation of new parking areas and the improvement of public transport are just some of the initiatives which will help make the capital more accessible and livable. The aim is to help Rome show itself to the world in all its beauty, while maintaining its commitment to becoming a modern and sustainable city.
