The Rome cinema which hosted the pre-Jubilee Film Festival to receive an award at the Venice FilmFestival

02 September 2024

The Cinema delle Province in Rome, which hosted the Film Festival ‘Faces and CounterFaces of Hope’ in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, will receive the Carlo Lizzani Award at the Venice Film Festival. On September 4, 2024, the single-screen cinema on Viale delle Province will be recognised at the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido di Venezia “for its commitment to promoting independent Italian cinema and implementing initiatives aimed at inclusion in the complicated reality of the Capital”, as stated in the press release accompanying the award.

The cinema, which has been operational since 1934, is the “Community Hall” of the Parish of Sant’Ippolito, located next to the cinema, and is a place where, for almost a century, people have also worked to evangelize through the use of cinematographic art and culture. It’s an example of a real pastoral initiative open to believers and non-believers alike, those seeking a path of faith and those interested in the great themes of human existence. Because of its evangelizing mission, from 14 to 21 April 2024, the Cinema delle Province was chosen by the Dicastery for Evangelization to host the Film Festival in preparation for the 2025 Holy Year. It featured 14 exceptional screenings, including cult films and films recently released in cinemas, and saw the participation of over 2,200 movie-goers.

The Lizzani Award is a prize given at  the Venice Film Festival, created by the National Association of Film Authors in order to "enhance the activities of exhibitors who work - amid a thousand difficulties - to maintain the central role of the collective viewing of cinematographic works on the big screen".
