Final wall of the Piazza Pia building site demolished in preparation for the Jubilee

17 July 2024

This morning, as part of the building works being carried out by Anas (Società del Polo Infrastrutture of the FS Italiane Group) ahead of the Jubilee of 2025, the separating wall that divided the new underpass from the existing one "Lungotevere in Sassia" in Piazza Pia, was taken down.

And the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, His Excellency Archbishop Rino Fisichella, was on hand to witness the big moment. Also present for the occasion were the Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, the President of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca, the Mayor of Rome , Roberto Gualtieri, the Councillor for Public Works of Rome, Ornella Segnalini, the President of Anas, Edoardo Valente, the Director of Anas Investments, Eutimio Mucilli, and the Manager of Anas Territorial Structure for Lazio, Marco Moladori.

The construction site, where the first works started on 21 August 2023, is now moving towards its final phase after less than a year’s work.

The new underpass will be 170 meters long - including the link up with the existing road. The excavation is carried out using the the "cut&cover" method which allows work simultaneously on the surface and inside the underpass.

The project will be completed by a full makeover of the whole Piazza Pia area. A study of the paving surfaces of the entire area is underway, a new public lighting system is being proposed, a reworking of the green space is planned and better accessibility for people with reduced mobility will be ensured.

The demolition of the separating wall between the new and the old underpass not only marks a decisive turning point in the works, but is a testimony to the diligent and constant efforts of all involved in the construction site, which is coming in on time and will be completed before the opening of the Holy Door next December.
