Archbishop Fisichella: “With the renovation of Piazza Pia a panorama will open up that will be unique in the world”
“With the renovation of Piazza Pia, a new perspective will open up, uniting Castel Sant'Angelo with St. Peter's Basilica. It will be unique in the world.”
Yesterday the Pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Archbishop Rino Fisichella attended the inspection of the construction site in Piazza Pia, with the Extraordinary Commissioner for the Jubilee and Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. Both men reiterated the importance of constant collaboration between the Dicastery, the Municipality and the other bodies involved.
“The Piazza Pia site, which involves the construction of a new underpass ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, is 30% complete,” emphasised Gualtieri. “The underpass is a work of high technical complexity, which, when it is finished, will allow us to offer the city a truly beautiful new piazza."
Work also began yesterday on the construction site in Via Ottaviano. The mayor said: “The street will be redeveloped by reorganizing the urban space, as a large access point to Piazza Risorgimento, and from there to the Vatican Museums and to St Peter’s Square. All the redevelopment work, in addition to being functional - to ensure a better access to the holy places sought out by pilgrims - will remain as a lasting legacy for the benefit of the city in the future."
