03 February 2025

It is expected that around 30,000 people will be in Rome to take part in the ‘Run Rome The Marathon’ event, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary on March 16. In addition, several thousand will simultaneously participate in the Run4Rome solidarity relay. To mark the Jubilee, the marathon runners, from 110 nations around the world, will be able to enjoy the evocative route along the famous Via della Conciliazione, across Piazza Papa Pio XII and round Largo del Colonnato at the 16km stage of the race, with St. Peter's Basilica right before their eyes. The Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery of Evangelization, Archbishop Rino Fisichella has granted Run Rome The Marathon the official Patronage of the Dicastery and it is now included among the official events of the 2025 Jubilee. “I am delighted that we are working with Run Rome The Marathon for the Jubilee year,” said Archbishop Fisichella, who is in charge of organizing the Holy Year of 2025. He continued: “The athletes, young and old, who run the marathon along Via della Conciliazione, next month, will be able to contemplate a unique beauty, and beauty is of course a preferential way to experience God. Running through the streets of the eternal city they will make the beauty of Rome seem even more impressive.” Alessandro Onorato, Counsellor for Sport, Tourism, Fashion and Major Events of Rome Capital (the city council) said: “The link up with the Holy See, in this year of the Jubilee, will make the 30th edition of the Rome Marathon even more special, and it will have a record number of participants. The inclusion on the marathon route of the stretch around the Vatican shows the enormous potential of this event - there are no other races in the world that can boast such an evocative route. This will be a celebration of sport and inclusion over the marathon weekend with many initiatives taking place for social and charitable purposes." The Marathon Mass has already been confirmed for Saturday 15 March at 6pm.
