Jubilee construction works at Piazza Pia. Gualtieri: "It will be completed by December". Fisichella: “The city will become more welcoming”
Works are on schedule at the huge construction project in Rome which will result in the redevelopment and pedestrianization of Piazza Pia, between Castel Sant'Angelo and Via della Conciliazione.
The guarantee was given by the Mayor of Rome and the Extraordinary Commissioner for the Jubilee, Roberto Gualtieri, in an interview on Thursday 26 October, during an inspection of the site. He said: “By December 2024 the works will be completed. We are carefully monitoring the work shifts to make sure everything is on schedule. It will be an extraordinary achievement: we started in January 2023 and in less than two years - record time - we will have completed this very complex operation.”
“There has been a slowdown in journey times,” admitted the mayor referring to the inconvenience caused for traffic near the construction site, “but it is a very small difference, it is certainly not an upheaval. The average journey in the area during the six months of major works has increased by just two minutes in travel time to reach Via della Traspontina.
“However we will certainly try to reduce it as much as possible. I thank the Roman commuters for their understanding."
Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and the delegate of Pope Francis for the organization of the 2025 Jubilee also appealed to Romans for patience: “A few more months of patience and the city will become not only more beautiful but also easier to navigate,” he told TV reporters. “A more accessible city is a more livable city, not only for the pilgrims who come for the Jubilee but also for the people of Rome.”
The Councilor for Public Works, Ornella Segnalini, and the CEO of Anas, Aldo Isi, were also present at the visit.
